CM seeks report on Edhi Centre encroachments
Shah directs alternative land to be provided for centre in Thatta
KARACHI:
Just a day after Faisal Edhi complained that land mafia in rural Sindh was encroaching upon centres of the Edhi Foundation, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah sought a report from the Hyderabad commissioner on his claims.
“We cannot tolerate the hindrances being created in humanitarian services rendered by the Edhi Foundation,” Shah said on Thursday.
The chief minister directed the commissioner to contact Faisal and resolve the matter. “I need action against the elements who are eyeing the Edhi centres,” he said. Faisal, along with his mother Bilquis Edhi, held a press conference in Karachi on Wednesday during which the two described how land grabbers were forcing their charity to scale down its services in rural areas of the province.
“The land mafia and local administration – including police – are stopping the Edhi Foundation from delivering humanitarian services in several districts of the province,” the son of the late philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi had said.
Land grabbers eyeing Edhi centres in Larkana, other parts of Sindh
The Edhi Welfare Centre in Thatta had been occupied by land mafia and police, he continued, adding that the local administration has closed the centre to cover up the land grabbing. “Most Edhi Centres in rural Sindh are being encroached upon by the land mafia and the local administration is conniving with them by issuing them forged documents,” said Faisal.
He had called upon Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Shah to take notice of the situation as the tactics, according to him, were forcing his foundation to limit its services in the areas where their centres are being encroached upon or forcefully shut down.
Separately, Shah directed the Hyderabad commissioner to make necessary arrangements for the provision of office space tor Edhi Foundation in Thatta so that they could continue unhindered welfare services.
The commissioner told the chief minister that the court, not the local administration of Thatta, shut the centre down. To this the CM replied that adequate alternative space should be provided in Thatta till the conclusion of the case.
Faisal Edhi to soon start flying aircraft to rescue patients
He directed the commissioner to look after the Edhi Foundation properly and resolve their issues on a top priority basis. "They are doing the best service for humanity and it is our responsibility to support and help them in their services," he said.
The chief minister also spoke to the Karachi commissioner and directed him to meet Faisal and resolve his problems. "This is quite surprising and deplorable that the people of the land mafia are grabbing the property of the Edhi Foundation," Shah said, asking where the administration was in such a situation.
A person like Faisal Edhi should not be made so helpless that he has to reach the administration and government through press conferences, he scolded.
"It is our responsibility to remain in touch with them so that they continue their services," said the CM.
