Students in Multan suffer as Punjab govt bans CTIs

Students protest, complain against the lack of teachers in colleges, say education is being impacted

MULTAN: Scores of students from government colleges staged a protest against the Punjab Government for imposing a ban on the allocation of College Teacher Interns (CTI) after they had been selected through a given procedure of interview.

Students gathered at Chungi number 6 in Multan today and chanted slogans against the provincial government. Shehzad, a student of BS Mass Communication, said that there was only one professor for journalism in the entire department. He said that names of teachers were announced after the selection last week but due to the imposition of ban on CTIs, teachers did not take over their jobs.



Mehnaz, another student termed the ban 'unlawful' and said that the Punjab government should reconsider its decision of imposing the ban. She also said that many parents have invested in their children's education, but due to the ban, there weren't enough teachers in the colleges.

Irfan, another student termed it "failure of the system of education in the country". He said that teachers were banned on political basis. "Politicians should worry about educating the youth instead of fulfilling their ulterior motives," he added.

"We cannot afford the fee of private colleges which is why we got into government colleges," said Imran. "But the non-availability of teachers in colleges and the sudden ban on CTIs has greatly affected education," he added. Students demanded that the ban on CTIs be removed, and all the teachers selected on the basis of interviews and credentials must be installed immediately.



Director Colleges Syed Haider Abbas Gardaizi said that the decision of banning CTIs was taken by Punjab government and teachers cannot be installed without the permission of the provincial government. He said that teachers can be placed as soon as the government removes the ban.
