Over 500 teachers retire, 100 ready to quit in Haripur
Education dept yet to start hiring, official says
HARIPUR:
At least 525 primary schools teachers have retired this month in Haripur, while another 100 have filed applications for early retirement from services, sources said.
In the absence of fresh hiring, the exodus of teaching staff from girls primary schools has created a huge gap and disrupted academic activities. Some got promoted, others retired while many quit due to strict monitoring, sources said.
Sources in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Education Department said that the district education officer (DEO) of Haripur was not only hapless but helpless in the situation. The DEO has been appealing to authorities in Peshawar to appoint teachers but no one was listening to him.
The department knew well in advance that these teachers would be reaching the superannuation age and would retire in October, but they did not arrange the alternatives, sources said.
Meanwhile, the teachers hired through National Testing Services (NTS) have started quitting their jobs too after the provincial government refused to regularise their services. The K-P government makes tall promises and then goes back on its word, disgruntled teachers say. Such is the state of affairs in the province that only in one district, there were 525 posts of teachers, 400 seats of various lying vacant in the primary section and 40 posts in secondary.
On provincial level, college teachers were protesting for their rights, sources said. Classes have been suspended in colleges for the past one week owing to the protest of the faculty demanding implantation of the hiring contract.
An official of the education department Sarfaraz Tareen said that the provincial government was cognisant of the situation. The PTI led K-P government was taking various steps for the improvement of the healthy and education sectors, he said adding a number of officials were promoted recently creating a void in the department. As soon as people are hired on the empty seats the void would be filled, he explained.
Ghosts disappear
Apart from reaching the retirement age, some teachers have quit owing to strict monitoring by biometric attendance and raiding teams of K-P Education Department, sources said. At least 100 male teachers of primary schools have filed applications for early retirement, they said.
