SIALKOT:
Pakistan and Canada have a vast scope to work together to further strengthen economic relations, said Canada High Commissioner to Pakistan Perry Calderwood on Thursday.

Addressing a meeting at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), he said that private sectors of the two countries should promote trade, investment and economic partnership in areas of mutual interest.

“Canada is keen to boost mutual trade ties with Pakistan,” the envoy said, adding he would make every effort to remove hurdles in the way of trade between the two countries. The high commissioner also pledged full support and technical assistance to ensure easy access for Pakistan’s business community to the Canadian markets.

Calderwood said Canada was making all-out efforts to establish strong business-to-business contacts and people-to-people linkages.

The trade volume between Pakistan and Canada could be increased to at least $3 billion from $1 billion, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, SCCI Acting President Abdul Waheed highlighted that Canada and Pakistan had always been close in terms of bilateral trade and socio-economic development.

He said Canada’s expertise in industrial and economic sectors and its human welfare index was among the best and Pakistan was eager to benefit from those capabilities and skills.

Waheed called it encouraging that both countries were stepping up efforts to improve bilateral trade and investment, adding countless measures had been taken to ensure that the steps proved successful. The SCCI official called for organising single-country exhibitions to encourage frequent exchange of trade delegations.
