ISLAMABAD:

The federal government has extended the deadline for completion of house-listing operations of the census by another six days, according to senior officials of the statistics division.

The house-listing operation, which began on April 5, was scheduled to be completed within 15 days, ending on April 19. The new deadline is April 25.

Officials said the exercise had been hampered by security concerns in some areas and delay in starting the operation in cantonment areas.

Earlier, Sindh Census Commissioner Noor Muhammad Leghari had admitted that the pace of work in cantonment areas is very slow because enumerators need special permission to visit army installations.

The census exercise has already been fraught with controversies including accusations of political interference, especially by nationalist parties and minority groups.
