Transport fares hiked by Rs2 across the board

Transporters wanted Rs5 hike, RTA wanted Re1, compromise reached.

PESHAWAR:

Commuter fares for local transport were increased by Rs2 per stop from Tuesday, officials and transporters said. The fare list was issued to transporters at General Bus Stand and will be effective from April 19.

Public Transport Owners Association leader Khan Zaman told The Express Tribune that the fare increase came after weeklong negotiations.

Zaman said that the transporters wanted a per stop increase of Rs5, while the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) wanted an increase of Rs1. After negotiations, both parties settled for Rs2.

RTA Secretary Naseem Baacha confirmed that the transporters were threatening strikes to press for an increase.

He said that to avoid overcharging, the RTA has printed the fares list on stickers, which the bus drivers must prominently paste on their windscreens.

Baacha appealed to the public to submit a complaint with the RTA in case they face overcharging. “We will deal with such cases stringently.”

The list says that commuters travelling from Kambuah Adda, GT Road Bus Stand, Hashtnagri, Firdous Cinema, Khyber Bazaar will pay Rs12 instead of the Rs10, while those travelling up to Saddar Stadium on this same route will pay Rs13. Similarly, those travelling to Khyber Teaching Hospital and secondary board will pay Rs15.

Commuters going to Hayatabad on the same route will pay Rs19 instead of Rs17.

Those travelling from Kambuah Stand, Ring Road and Charsadda Road and Hayatabad Phase VI and VII will pay Rs19.

Commuters shuttling between General Bus Stand Kohat Road and Qamar Din Ghari, Bhanamari and Civil Quarters will be charged Rs12 while those going to Saddar Stadium from the same stand will have to pay Rs13. Those travelling from Ring Road, Hazarkhani Stand to Saddar Stadium will have to pay Rs13.

The fare list also says that students including those studying in religious seminaries, disabled and senior citizens (over 60-years-old) will pay half of the fare.
