Three children fall to death in three days

WASA Chief had suspended two officials for their negligence

LAHORE: A three-year-old child died after falling into a manhole in Missri Shah on Saturday.

The victim named Yousuf Masih is the third child to have died after falling into a manhole in the last three days in the city. Police said that the toddler, who was the only child of his parents, was playing with his friend in the street when he suddenly slipped and fell into a gutter. The incident caused anguish among the victim’s family and neighbours, who took to the street and staged a protest.

Water and Sanitation Agency Vice Chairman Shahbaz Ahmad said that they have suspended SDO Sheikh Azmat and sub-engineer Shahzad Masih for negligence on their part.

On Friday, another child named Junaid died after falling into a drain in the limits of Shafiqabad police. The family and relatives of the victim also staged a protest and blamed the government for his death. In another incident that took place in Shahdara, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl Fiza died after falling into a manhole. WASA Chief had suspended two officials for their negligence.
