Pakistan boxers to train at Amir Khan’s academy

PBF gears up for the 2012 London Olympics.

KARACHI:

In a bid to gear up for next year’s Olympics, Pakistan pugilists will be travelling to England to sharpen their skills at the WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan’s academy.

Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) President Doda Khan Bhutto said at least three boxers will be selected from the ongoing national camp in Islamabad for training in Amir’s academy where they will be joined by the world champion’s younger brother Haroon Khan and other British boxers.

“Training under high-profile coaches would give the ideal preparations to our boxers,” Bhutto, who was recently elected as the vice-president of the Asian Boxing Confederation, told reporters at a reception given in his honour. “Amir was busy with his recent bout but is now available.”

Bhutto also announced the schedule of a joint-training camp to be held from June 20 to July 20 in Islamabad, promising the camp would be a high profile one, unlike last year’s, which was only attended by boxers from Sri Lanka.

“Around ten Asian countries have almost confirmed their participation.”

Participation in back-to-back events

The PBF president added that the boxers would also participate in various international events before this September’s World Boxing Championship that will also serve as the London Olympics Qualifiers.

Pakistan, after taking part in the China Two-Star Boxing Championship (May 24 to June 3) next month, will feature in the President Cup (June 4 to 10) in Indonesia. Apart from the senior boxers, the upcoming pugilists would also be sent to compete in the Youth and Junior Boxing Tournament to be held in Kazakhstan.
