Punjab to establish drug testing

Laboratory to serve entire pharma industry.

LAHORE:

The Punjab Industrial Estate (PIE) has decided to set up a drug testing laboratory of international standards at a cost of Rs100 million at the Sundar Industrial Estate, with the objective of research and international-level testing. The laboratory will serve the entire pharmaceutical sector of the country.

The federal health ministry, in a meeting held recently with PIE officials, assured them of full cooperation in establishing the Pakistan Drug Testing and Research Centre (PDTRC) in Lahore.

PDTRC will act as a drug testing laboratory for pharmaceutical manufacturers to perform sophisticated tests which require hi-tech and expensive laboratory equipment. It will also act as a research centre for bio-equivalence studies for drugs marked for export.

Other services to be provided include dissolution profiling, calibration of instruments and IT support for information management systems.

Furthermore, 160 pharma industrial units are being established in the Sundar Industrial Estate for drug manufacturing. Keeping in view the high number of units, PIE has allocated Rs50 million for establishment of a separate zone for pharmaceutical manufacturers.
