In the key electoral showdown, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) proved their mettle against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) by securing 58,821 votes against the latter’s 44,928.

Both sides used social media, more specifically Twitter, as an avenue to declare their triumph and defeat. From videos of PML-N’s supposed control room to the bewildered reactions of the PTI voters, all are available for the world to see.

Here are some of the reactions seen today:

“Extremely proud of PTI [for] putting up an amazing fight against the might of federal and Punjab governments. Well done Dr Yasmin. Future belongs to PTI,” tweeted National Assembly member, Jahangir Tareen.

“PML-N was alone on one side and all the other forces were on the other side. People have decided that their prime minister is Nawaz Sharif and have rejected the judgment,” said a tweet by Maryam Nawaz soon after the results were announced.

Imran Khan, who although remained largely composed, could not resist taking a swipe at PML-N and tweeted “Applaud courage and determination with which Dr Yasmin Rashid fought NA120 elections against federal, provincial and local government backed PMLN.” He also went on to say “Want to thank all our PTI workers, especially our women, who worked tirelessly in the election campaign.”

Sindh Governor and PML-N member Muhammad Zubair’s tweet reiterated and dispelled a statement Khan made when the campaigns started. “Imran khan had said NA-120 vote will decide whether Supreme Court (SC) decision was right or wrong. Well the lahoris have spoken and have totally rejected SC’s decision,” his tweet read.

PTI’s Asad Umer and Shah Mehmood Qureshi showed maturity in their tweets. Umer’s twitter simply stated “So proud of Yasmin Rashid and the campaign she carried out,” and Qureshi said “Well done Yasmin Rashid, a courageous woman who fought against the entire state and to all PTI workers who displayed calm and resilience.”

Shehbaz Sharif although stayed away from the entire election campaign, tweeted “Result of the NA120 election has shown that the hearts of the masses beat with PMLN.” He also tweeted, “Congratulations to Begum Kalsoom Nawaz, PMLN office bearers, voters, supporters and workers on an excellent victory in NA120 contest”.
