NAPLES, ITALY: Three people belonging to the same family died after falling into a volcanic crater in Pozzuoli, Italy.

The incident took place when the 11-year-old boy fell into a hole at the Solfatara Crater along with his 42-year-old mother. The father, 45, died while attempting to rescue them.

The youngest member of their family, however, a 7-year-old managed to survive. It is still not clear if the family was overcome by molten lava or not.

This crater is located in the Phlegraen Fields where the ancient volcanic craters are frequently visited by Italian school children. Solfatara is dormant volcano which still releases steam and fumes.

Formed 4000 years ago, the volcano last erupted in 1198. Roman myths suggest that it is supposed to be the home of god Vulcan.
