The Peshawar High Court has declared the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government’s performance in dealing with the ongoing dengue outbreak in the province as the "worst".

Hearing a petition on Tuesday on the management of the outbreak, the high court expressed displeasure over the deputy commissioner showing up late for the proceedings, according to Express News.

In his remarks, Justice Qaiser Rashid declared the K-P government’s performance as the "worst" and said human lives had been put in danger because of ineffective management.

Health Secretary Abid Majeed told the court that the provincial health department was working hard to control the dengue outbreak and timely treatment was being provided at all hospitals. However, he added, dengue mosquitoes could not be eliminated in the province for the past five years.

Peshawar Deputy Commissioner Saqib Raza Aslam said since August 21 the number of dengue patients has decreased, while all affected areas had been fumigated.

“We had asked Punjab to monitor our progress. As per a federal agency report, with our efforts, instances of the disease have reduced,” he said.

The court ordered that the provincial government should enlist help from wherever it can to end the dengue outbreak.

K-P has suffered a lot because of terrorism and now citizens are being affected by dengue. They should not face more inconvenience, it ordered.

The PHC also directed that efforts to ensure that there is no dengue outbreak next year should begin from now and funds should be allocated for that.

It is the government’s responsibility to eradicate the dengue larva, the court declared, adding that awareness drives should focus on mosques and homes.

As of September 1, dengue fever has claimed 12 lives in the province. Amid the outbreak, the K-P government has declared a health emergency.
