GOC lauds SU students' paintings featuring armed forces' sacrifice

Prizes distributed among top artists in various categories

Education is inevitably a significant source of development, whereas art is the most powerful tool to transmit edification and do character-building of the youth of the country.

Hyderabad General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General Muhammad Ali said this on Tuesday while addressing the inauguration ceremony of a one-day art exhibition highlighting the sacrifices of Pakistan Army rendered on the momentous day of September 6, 1965 as well as sacrifices of police and Rangers personnel for the country.

The exhibition was organised by the Institute of Art and Design (IAD), University of Sindh (SU), Jamshoro in collaboration with Pakistan Army 18 Division, Hyderabad at the institute's premises.

Pakistan has produced several world class artists like Sadequain, Ameen Guljee, AR Nagori and Abdul Rehman Chughtai, said the Hyderabad GOC, adding that the art was first discovered in Spain some 37,000 years ago.

Maj Gen Ali told the gathering that he was glad to witness overflowing patriotic spirit of the SU students and faculty coupled with their incomparable passion, penchant and prowess in art and craft. He observed that the SU always offered him a domestic feel. The officer added that he would like to visit the varsity in future as well.

"This is my second visit to University of Sindh - the first being on August 14 - and I am delighted to admit that both the times, I have found SU students and teachers putting up exemplary show of love for their motherland - Pakistan", Hyderabad GOC maintained.

He extended thanks to the SU Vice-Chancellor (VC)Prof Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat for SU's all-out support to the Pakistan Army's academic initiatives and engagements, assuring that Pakistan Army too, at its end, would always be glad to assist SU in its academic and research activities.

Maj Gen Ali further said that he was marveled to behold the quality and standard of the paintings created by the students, as he found them no way lesser than the work produced by art icons anywhere else in the country and abroad.

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs Muhammad Ali said that she had come to attend the event with her spouse with the specific objective of interacting with female students and faculty of the varsity. She added that she was highly pleased to see robust and brimful patriotism of SU students as expressed in their work and word.

She eulogised particularly the way SU students had grasped sacrifices of each individual martyr of the military, police and other law enforcement agencies throughout the history of Pakistan.

Earlier, the GOC along with his spouse inaugurated the exhibition in the presence of SU Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Chandio who represented the VC Dr Burfat who is in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj.

After performing the inauguration, Maj Gen Ali saw the paintings, posters and artworks sketched by the students, displayed at Banazir Art Gallery of the institute under the theme 'Defence Day of Pakistan and Martyrs of the Personnel of Security Forces, Law Enforcement Agencies and Police'.

‘Universities should focus on quality’

Hyderabad GOC viewed each work displayed at the exhibition and sought details of the artworks from their creators.

The art exhibition featured paintings, posters, sketches and portraits underlining various episodes and incidents of valour, courage, sacrifice and bravery of the armed forces of Pakistan for the past 70 years.

Towards the end, prizes were given to the top three artworks in various categories. In the category of painting, Rajab Charan, Ume Rubab and Muhammad Ali Supro were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively, whereas in the sketch category Sajjad Jaffer, Gul-e-Meena and Kinza Laghari grabbed the prizes. Prizes to Shahzeb Jhatial, Waqar Hussain and Rauf Abbas were given away under poster category. Moreover, consolation and special prizes were also given to a few student artists.

Young artist and teacher at IAD Saeed Ahmed Mangi presented Maj Gen Ali with a portrait of the general which he had sketched.
