US wants to maintain ties with Pakistan
Diplomatic channels say Washington hopes to address Islamabad’s reservations through dialogue
KARACHI:
After Pakistan expressed serious reservation over the US president’s recent accusations that the country was providing safe havens to militants, members of the Trump administration have told Islamabad through backdoor channels that Washington wants to maintain its relations with it.
The federal government received this message after federal authorities started reviewing its policy towards the US.
Sources said the US wanted to maintain its ties with Pakistan on a balanced level and was ready to address Pakistan’s reservations through dialogue.
Pakistan, on the other hand, insists that the Trump administration gives a clear signal of change in its new policy before it enters into further talks with the US.
Sources in the federal government told Daily Express that Pakistan’s civil and military leadership had expressed serious reservations on the new US policy and Washington was informed that the do-more policy would not be accepted.
“If the US wants to maintain its relation with Pakistan, it will have to adopt a balanced policy,” a source privy to the matter stated.
The sources further said that the delegation level talks between the two countries would resume soon.
The prime minister and the foreign minister will soon leave for New York to participate in the UN session. Sideline meetings with US authorities are also expected there.
According to the sources, diplomatic channels are still working between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Islamabad has told Kabul that only a reconciliation process can bring stable peace in the war-torn country.
The sources said that both “Afghanistan and the US are insisting that Pakistan play its role in the reconciliation process”.
