Export target for oranges achieved

Total exports for current season to cross 300,000 tons.

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan has achieved its export target for oranges for fiscal 2010-11, by exporting about 300,000 tons of the fruit, according to an official of the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company.

The official said that Pakistan was the world’s sixth largest producer and exporter of the citrus fruit, adding that more than 200 packaging houses, with production of 8,000 tons per day, were operating in the country.

He said commercial exporters were supporting the industry and sharing business risks. He informed that oranges were being exported to all destinations and termed Iran’s recent permission for import of oranges at a meagre four per cent duty, a great opportunity for Pakistani exporters, who had been sending consignments to the country through Quetta.

Emerging markets such as the Philippines and Kuwait were also consuming large volumes of oranges, he added.

Supply of all inputs had been in line with demand, but floods at the start of the season last year, did impact availability of labour.

The official added that final statistics would be released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics and, with the season in its final stage, it was expected that the figure for exports would cross 300,000 tons.
