‘Port Qasim improving infrastructure’

Chairman seeks more investment from industries.

KARACHI:

The Port Qasim Authority (PQA) is working to improve infrastructure in its industrial zone to make it the first choice of shippers and industrialists, according to PQA Chairman Vice Admiral (Retired) Muhammad Shafi.

Speaking at a seminar on “Challenges faced by the industry, remedies and prospects for industrialisation” on Wednesday, Shafi said Port Qasim had shown tremendous growth in a limited period of time and expressed hope that industries in the area would invest more in future.

“We understand there is a need to improve infrastructure, for which we have asked the Pakistan Railways to improve its system,” he said.

Port Qasim is in an ideal position for expansion of industrial activities, owing to the huge area of land owned by the authority. “Sea ports are instrumental in industrialisation around the world and we are fortunate that the Port Qasim has become a strong industrial port in the region,” he added.

“We try to provide infrastructure to industrialists and, in return, expect them to invest more in our industrial zone. Ports cannot succeed if they are neglected by industries around them,” he asserted.

There were more than 180 industries operating in the port area while 257 more were in the pipeline, informed Shafi.

Meanwhile, Bin Qasim Association of Trade and Industry (BQATI) Patron-in-Chief Mian Mohammad Ahmed, while talking to the media, said that a lot of industries in the port area were not starting operations due to the power crisis in the country.
