PU VC urges better understanding of human rights
Says Pakistan has great laws, but no implementation

Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir has said in order to curb human rights violations in society, people need to understand certain basic concepts. He said that for example, human rights have always been promoted in Islam.
He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of a three-day training workshop on humanity, altruism and citizenship in Pakistan in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Human Rights at Undergraduate Block on Wednesday. Justice (Retd) Nasira Javed Iqbal, Ministry of Human Rights Secretary Rabiya Javeria Agha, Joint Secretary Humaira Azam Khan, Workshop Moderator Iftikhar Ahmed Tarrar, Dr Shahbaz Cheema and other faculty members of different departments were present on the occasion.
Addressing the workshop, Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir said that Pakistan had the best legislation on human rights, but its implementation was a problem. He said all stakeholders must take an interest in protecting human rights in Pakistan. He appreciated the government for taking initiatives to curb human rights violations in the country.
Federal Secretary Rabiya Javeria Agha said Pakistan was facing problems of terrorism and refugees; therefore it was the responsibility of the government to protect human rights in the country.
She said that discriminatory attitudes towards any citizen must be abolished.
The workshop would continue till Friday in which several technical sessions would be held.
