Selectors rue ‘step-motherly’ attitude
Feel deprived after not being acknowledged for the World Cup show.
KARACHI:
While the Pakistan team continues to be showered with praise and rewards on reaching the semi-final of the World Cup, the selection committee has complained for being neglected and not being given credit for their work.
Shahid Afridi’s men have been praised by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the government since their return from the campaign and were also awarded Rs500,000 each by the Sindh chief minister.
However, the selection committee, which often finds itself on the hit-list after a poor performance, has not received even a word of appreciation from its own board, according to a selector.
“It’s very disappointing to see such a step-motherly attitude,” a member of the selection committee told The Express Tribune. “Monetary compensation apart, we’re not even praised by the PCB for selecting the best team given the lack of choices we had when the event started.”
Pakistan lost three key players including former captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir who were banned for their role in spot-fixing during the England tour last year.
“We made tough decisions under a crisis and took risks by including youngsters in the team.
“If the decisions had backfired then we would have been the first ones to be made the scapegoats.”
Meanwhile, PCB Chief Selector Mohsin Khan was diplomatic when queried about the complaint made by the selection committee member.
“Good work deserves to be praised,” said Khan before adding that it was up to the board to realise the selection committee’s job.
“Even a little praise by the authorities would have been a huge morale-booster for the selection committee.”
