Only 15-20% of ICT graduates are employed

Expert says university curricula are not in accordance with industry’s needs

Speakers at a technology seminar underlined the need for incorporating modern technology trends in marketing and overall business plans of domestic companies for sophisticated and accurate decision-making.

Titled “Technology: A Tool to Convert Potential into Opportunity”, the event was organised by the Marketing Association of Pakistan, Lahore Chapter.

Discussing the potential of information and communication technology (ICT) in marketing and advertising, Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) Chairman and Infotech CEO Naseer A Akhtar stressed the importance of big data and how companies could utilise it to make well-informed decisions.

He said more data had been produced and recorded in the past two years than the data produced throughout history, adding that less than 0.5% of all data was being analysed and used currently.

He revealed that 73% of international organisations had already invested or planned to invest in big data this year.


Akhtar also called for building linkages between the industry and academia in order to enhance the ICT capacity and update the curriculum according to industry needs.

He was of the view that university curricula were not in accordance with the industry’s requirements at the moment, claiming that merely 15-20% of the ICT graduates were employable currently.

He also stressed the need for government support through diplomatic and commercial channels in order to give a boost to IT exports.
