KARACHI: A high-profile kidnapping case of the year emerged in the early hours of Tuesday as a group of armed men kidnapped the son of a provincial assembly member in the outskirts of Karachi.

Six different teams of law enforcement agencies were formed to recover him. However, the law enforcers were not able to recover him despite the passage of a day. Twenty-year-old Hayat, son of Pakistan Peoples Party MPA Ghulam Murtaza Baloch, was kidnapped near Baqai Medical Hospital on Super Highway in Gadap Town on the night between Monday and Tuesday.

"The abducted son of the MPA was travelling in his Premio car along with his cousin, Ikhlaq," explained Gadap City SHO Khan Nawaz. "Shortly after they crossed Baqai Medical Hospital, at least five armed men on a car intercepted their vehicle and kidnapped them."

The officer added that Hayat, who lived in Malir Cantonment, was travelling towards Gadap City to visit his relatives when the armed men kidnapped him. "The unidentified abductors, at first, kidnapped both of them but later dropped Ikhlaq," SHO Nawaz revealed. "The suspects also took the car in which Hayat was travelling."

The family came to know about the kidnapping after Ikhlaq informed them about the incident. Upon receiving the information, the police started operations in the area to find Hayat. To police are conducting operations in various parts of the city, particularly in the Gadap Town and its surrounding areas, to recover him, said District Malir SSP Rao Anwar.

Meanwhile, Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) of Karachi police, which specialises in dealing with the cases of kidnapping, initiated investigations in collaboration with the Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC). A senior AVCC official disclosed that six different police teams have been formed to recover Hayat. The teams may also extend operations to areas in Balochistan as it is also being suspected that the abductors shifted Hayat to Balochistan through Northern Bypass or kutcha areas.

Police clueless about kidnapped child

Over half-a-dozen cases have so far been registered pertaining to kidnapping for ransom in the current year. According to the CPLC officials, the kidnapping was apparently committed for ransom. However, the ransom motive cannot be ascertained unless the family receives call from the kidnappers, demanding ransom.

The family sources claimed that they have no personal enmity with anyone, nor they received any kind of threat from anyone. The family has also so far not received any call from the kidnappers for ransom.
