The government is set to initiate proceedings to amend Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution, which led to the disqualification of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from office last month.

According to Express News, the decision was announced by Federal Law Minister Zahid Hamid at the National Assembly session on Tuesday.

Hamid said the law does not provide as to how long a lawmaker should remain disqualified; which, he added, should be less than five years.

"Government wants this amendment and the proposal will be tabled before the constitutional committee for implementation after due consultation," he was quoted as saying.

PM Abbasi resists attempts to vote down PTI govt

On July 28, a five-member bench of the Supreme Court had disqualified Nawaz from the PM’s office for failing to declare a salary, which he had not withdrawn as an executive of Dubai-based company, as an asset when filing his nomination papers in 2013.

While the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has called for a "grand national dialogue" following Nawaz's ouster, political parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party have ruled out any immediate support to the PML-N.

A brainchild of former military dictator General Ziaul Haq, the said articles detail conditions on which a lawmaker can be declared eligible for public office.

Irtaza M. Awan | 6 years ago | Reply The only real hope, solution, resolution to Afghan problem was what was tried by Pakistan in 2014. Get all Taliban (through Qatar office) on negotiation table with Afghan Government along side U.S.A. and China (called the Quadilateral group). "Make" or "buy" Taliban factions into a vague peace/power sharing arrangement (maybe give governership of Kandahar and Helmand to Taliban); seal it with Mullah Omar's stamp of approval (even though he was dead); announce some time later that he is dead and Mullah Akhtar Mansoor is new emir; but the "peace treaty" lives on since it has been signed by Mullah Omar itself. Sure in such situation some factionalized fighting would still continue but not the wholesome war we have now. Unfortunately India sabotaged the whole process at a critical junction since such a settlement did not suit their "neferious" strategic gameplay; and because had this arrangement gone through India would have been the only one left without a chair when the music stopped playing! Obama just could not read that gameplay and fumbled badly. Situation now is Taliban are not going to stop and its now winner take all. Lets see how much more American treasure and blood Trump is willing to waste before he throws in the towel. Taliban have all the time in the World while Trump has just a few months to prove his new strategy is working! Its game over for U. S. in Afghanistan.
