Sindh Rangers, police arrest suspect involved in extortion in Karachi's Lyari

Says the arrested suspect, during the investigation revealed making threatening calls to victims

KARACHI:

Sindh Rangers, in a joint operation with the Sindh police based on intelligence, arrested a suspect involved in extortion from Lyari Karachi on Wednesday, according to an official statement.

The press release issued by the Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) identified the arrested suspect as Nasir, alias Nana, son of Taj Muhammad.

"During initial interrogation, the suspect revealed that, along with an accomplice, he had sent an extortion slip demanding Rs1.2 million and two 30-bore pistol bullets to a rent-a-car owner via a private ride-hailing service parcel," it added.

The statement further mentioned that the suspect later made threatening calls via WhatsApp, warning the victim of death and serious consequences if the extortion amount was not paid.

It said that raids were being conducted to arrest the suspect’s accomplices, while a First Information Report (FIR) of the incident was registered at the relevant police station.

"The arrested individual has been handed over to the police for further legal proceedings," the statement added.

The spokesperson appealed to the public to report such elements by contacting the nearest Rangers check post, the Rangers helpline 1101, or the Rangers Madadgar WhatsApp number 03479001111, assuring that the identity of informants will be kept confidential.
