Police gun down four 'muggers'

Suspects were allegedly robbing citizens when police intercepted them

Four suspected criminals were killed during two separate alleged encounters with the police in the early hours of Sunday.

One of the alleged encounters took place near Super Highway, in which three suspects were killed. The incident occurred when the police intercepted the armed motorcyclists, who were allegedly mugging citizens in Janjal Goth on Super Highway within the limits of SITE Super Highway police station.

According to SHO Anar Khan, the police personnel on patrol reached the site and tried to arrest the robbers. However, the suspects opened fire on the police and tried to escape under the cover of fire. The officer said that the suspects were looting cash and valuables from the citizens who were en-route to the cattle market on Super Highway in order to buy sacrificial animals.

SHO Khan added that when they opened fire, the police retaliated with full force and three robbers were killed during the exchange of fire. Their bodies were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities and later to Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth for want of identification. The police also claimed to have recovered weapons and a motorcycle from their possession, while further investigations are under way.

Similarly, another suspected criminal was killed during an alleged encounter with the police in Korangi, within the limits of Zaman Town police station. According to the police officials, the police reached the site upon receiving the information that two armed suspects on a motorcycle were robbing a passer-by.

An exchange of fire reportedly took place between the police and suspects, during which one of the suspects was injured. The police managed to arrest him in injured condition, while his accomplice fled under the cover of fire. The arrested suspect, however, succumbed to his injuries on his way to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

The body was shifted to Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth for medico-legal formalities. The police also claimed to have seized a pistol from his possession. A case has been registered, while further investigations are under way.
