Malik’s disqualification: Senate chairman, govt have till April 20 to reply

LHC gives federal government last opportunity to file replies in case seeking Malik’s disqualification as a senator.

LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has given the federal government and the Senate chairman a last opportunity to file replies in a case seeking Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s disqualification as a senator.

The respondents have to file a reply by April 20 to the writ petition that seeks Malik’s disqualification on the basis of his removal from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

In a previous hearing, Justice Azmat Saeed had referred the matter to the LHC chief justice (CJ) to constitute a larger bench, following which the CJ formed a two-member bench comprising Justice Saeed and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah.

On Tuesday, Malik submitted a reply that there was no legal justification to hear the case as the president had already converted his removal from service into retirement. He prayed the court to dismiss the petition.
