KARACHI: The two policemen who lost their lives in separate incidents in Karachi were laid to rest on Friday.

The policemen were shot dead in separate incidents - one was killed in a targeted attack on the Northern Bypass, while the other lost his life while attempting to foil a robbery bid in Ferozabad.

A Police Qaumi Razakar (PQR) officer, Jamshed Ahmed, 42, was killed and Gulzar, 30, was wounded when armed motorcyclists targeted them while they were on their way to home after their volunteer work at a police post on the Northern Bypass within the limits of jurisdiction of the SITE Superhighway Industrial police station on Thursday.

This was the third attack on the police in Karachi by newly emerged militant group Ansarul Shariah Pakistan (ASP). The group claimed responsibility for the attack by throwing pamphlets at the crime scene right after the attack.

The funeral prayers of Ahmed were offered at Police Headquarters, Saudabad. The funeral was attended by large number of police officials and personnel and the policeman’s relatives. Later he was laid to rest at a local graveyard. The police high-ups have registered FIR No 127/17 over his killing at the Sindh police’s Counter-Terrorism Department.

Investigators believe that the same group is behind the incident, as the same weapon used in the attack was earlier used in the killings of two cops in Dhoraji locality and another police volunteer in Sharae Faisal area this year.

The funeral prayers of Rehmatullah, the policeman who lost his life while attempting to foil a robbery bid, were offered at Police Headquarters, Garden. Karachi Corps Commander Lt General Shahid Baig Mirza, Sindh Inspector-General of Police Allah Dino Khawaja, Rangers Director General Major General Muhammad Saeed, Karachi Additional IG Ghulam Qadir Thebo and various other senior officials attended the funeral prayers.

IG Khawaja, while speaking on the occasion, said the culprits who killed Rehmatullah would be behind bars soon, adding that not only would police actions against criminals continue, they would in fact be escalated. Rehmatullah was killed during an exchange of fire with the criminals who were looting citizens at gunpoint in Ferozabad on Thursday night.
