Asif now permitted in the UAE
Banned fast-bowler allowed after two years.
KARACHI:
Pakistan’s banned fast-bowler Mohammad Asif has been granted permission from the Dubai authorities to enter the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after being banned in the region for carrying illegal substance.
The fast-bowler confirmed that he was pardoned by the UAE government and has obtained permission to travel to the region. Asif, who is currently facing an International Cricket Council (ICC) ban of five years minimum in connection to the spot-fixing scandal, was detained at Dubai airport in June 2008 for two weeks after he was caught with illegal drugs. The fast-bowler, however, escaped punishment but was banned from entering the UAE for an indefinite period.
Asif said he got the news from the Pakistan Cricket Board that was informed by the authorities about his clearance.
“It’s good news for me,” said Asif. “I am also very hopeful of a reversal of the ICC ban and return to my playing days soon.
