Policeman martyred as gunmen attack checkpost in Bannu
In separate incident, man was killed and 2 others injured over land dispute in same district
BANNU:
A police constable was martyred when unidentified gunmen attacked a check post in Bannu district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday.
The attack, carried out in the early hours, targeted the police check post in Yak Qabar village of the district, police sources told The Express Tribune. “At the time of the attack, the constables were busy changing their duties and the victim was alone at the spot.”
Mehran Khan, the deceased constable, had been recently posted to the check post, the sources said. A case was registered at the Mundain Police Station against unknown gunmen and further investigations were underway.
Five Islamic State suspects arrested from FR Peshawar
In an another incident, a man was shot dead while two others sustained injuries over a dispute of land in the same district.
Pakistan has been battling an insurgency since shortly after it decided to become allies with the US following its invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
Violence has declined in recent years following a series of military offensives in the northwest border areas as well as concerted efforts to block the militants’ sources of funding. But remnants of militant groups are still able to carry out periodic bloody attacks, particularly in the northwest.
