ISLAMABAD:
Police have arrested a man who had allegedly killed his son-in-law in Bhara Kahu a few weeks ago.

Muhammad Anwar had been gunned down while he was getting a haircut at a barber shop in Bhara Kahu on July 17. The attacker came and fled in a car.

The incident had initially left the police stumped about the killers. However, homicide investigators soon discovered clues which led them to the victim’s father-in-law.

The suspect, identified as Ghulam Siddique, was arrested along with his driver and a servant and are currently in jail.

A police officer said that having few initial clues to go on, they utilised footage from closed circuit cameras around the crime scene and from the Safe City project. Further, they tallied that with geolocation data obtained from the suspect’s mobile phone. Together with these clues, investigators said they were able to identify the suspects.

Police further claimed that both, the suspect and the victim, were drug smugglers and used to push drugs together.

However, the two reportedly developed differences over how to divide the profits.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly told police that his son-in-law had hired assassins to kill him. But he managed to preempt that and killed his son-in-law first.

Police officials added that one of the possible motives behind the killing was that the suspect wanted to eliminate his son-in-law so that his daughter could then inherit all his wealth.

Investigators also discovered that the victim’s son, who was with him at the time of the murder, did not tell police that the attacker was his maternal grandfather.

However, when officials later confronted him with the evidence, he said that he was busy with his mobile just before the murder and when gunshots rang out, he scrambled for cover, without looking at the attacker.
