KARACHI:
House job doctors from the Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences, Dow International Dental College (DIDC) and Dow Dental College (DDC) boycotted on Saturday the outpatient departments and warned of going on strike against discrimination against dental graduates.

According to the young dentists, they were not being paid their stipend for the last three months and when the administration finally paid them, it was Rs13,000 for all house officers delivering their services in the institute of oral health sciences, which is less than the stipulated amount.

The lack of payment of stipend has forced more than 200 doctors to go on strike against the administration of Dow University. Terming it a violation of the CM's orders to pay Rs30,000 stipend per month, one of the dentists present at the protest said the doctors of DIDC and DDC have been deprived of their rights.

"This is like treating the dental graduates who have been performing their duties at the institute regularly but are getting less stipend when compared to MBBS graduates working at Ojha Campus like step-children," a young graduate told The Express Tribune, requesting anonymity. "We warn the vice-chancellor of Dow University and administration responsible to dispense their stipends and resolve their issues or else the doctors will go on a strike until their demands of increased stipend are met," the doctor added.

Another graduate of DDC, who boycotted the dental OPD in protest, was of the view that despite CM's orders to pay the minimum stipend to the doctors, the administration has been continuously coming up with excuses for not paying the stipulated amount to the young graduates. He said the payment that he received after the gap of three months has made them rethink continuing his services, because they have been continuously informing the management about their reservations yet nothing has been done.

A senior official told The Express Tribune that they have received applications for increased stipend for the dentists working as house officers at one of their institutes. The official said the issue will be brought to the notice of Dow University's vice-chancellor on Monday, who can give the order for their increased stipend.
