MQM's Lahore rally shifted to Punjab Stadium

April 10 rally shifted after CDGL said it could not provide security at Gaddafi Stadium.

LAHORE: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Saturday accepted the change in the venue for the April 10 rally to be held in Lahore.

The City District Government Lahore (CDGL) had proposed Punjab Stadium as the new venue for the April 10 MQM rally, stating that it would not be able to provide security if the rally is held at Gaddafi Stadium.

The district government said that Gaddafi Stadium was located next to Ferozpur Road and any rally at the stadium would cause major traffic jams.

MQM leaders had earlier said that the Punjab government was deliberately trying to sabotage the rally.

This is the third time that the government has changed the venue for the rally. The original venue was Minar-e-Pakistan.

MQM invites PPP to Punjab rally

The MQM extended a formal invitation to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) workers to attend the rally at Punjab Stadium during a meeting party leader Jehangir Badar in Lahore.

Badar thanked the MQM leaders for the invitation and said that the meeting would help bridge divides and strengthen the democratic system in the country.

The MQM had earlier also invited the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) to attend the rally.

MQM should built his image in such a manner that more educated people can join it and can start to serve the nation. MQM has the potential to do so they can begin it right now...

ifzan | 13 years ago | Reply aoa altaf bahi u r welcomed and i welcomed mqm with open arms in punjab. its pleasurable, and it is proud for us.i hope this convention dilutes the effects of propaganda carried by other parties against mqm in 1997 and ownward. my prays is 4 u and 4 country.

Independent from UK | 13 years ago | Reply @Dr.BS: There is no problem but let us see if MQM is really a mainstream party? See the structure of the rabita committee. How many Sindhis, Punjabis, Balochis and pushtoons are there? Its politics evolves around areas of Karachi as it does not really represent across the spectrum of population of Karachi. The ministers in the provincial cabinet do not care at all about the problems faced by Sindhis in the other cities are rural districts. Extortion and target killing is their norm of the day. Media has been so frightened that they start to focus their cameras on the audience hours before MQM supremo starts his speech. So, there is no problem if MQM really becomes a Mutahidah not mohajir and admits its past murderous deeds.

A Mirza | 13 years ago | Reply It's about time MQM expanded to other parts of the country (especially Lahore) to make its message heard and garner the Lahorites to bring about a positive change in Punjab too: how else can people from the masses there ever hope to get into the parliament (MQM being a shining example). After all, how long will the people of Punjab (and other provinces) continue to be exploited and play into the hands of the feudals and the rich. They should shed their biases (as blatantly exploited by their leaders thus far) and rally around MQM to make their voices heard and make a difference in our motherland- It doesn't take rocket science to fathom this! You go MQM...... we are with you to bring about a change, which Pakistan so badly needs!!

Maria | 13 years ago | Reply If they allow the MQM in Punjab, we'll soon see the same type of criminal violence that takes place in Karachi. The people of Lahore and Punjab will never support the MQM anyhow so why do we need to encourage violence? Let the MQM stay in Karachi because no one takes them seriously anywhere else in the country.

Blithe | 13 years ago | Reply It may help the MQM broaden its mindet and horizons. The present MQM is too provincial and treats Karachi like its fiefdom. The poople of Punjab don't really vote in terms of race or provincialism . Getting acqanted withthis sort of culture will help MQM.

The people of Pakistan can figure out on their own who they must vote for through political advertisements and political interviews. We should not be inconveniencing the citizens of any city especially because there is so much insecurity in the country.
