Project Shanakht goes digital
CPLC launches websites to identify bodies, verify stolen mobile phones
KARACHI:
The Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) has launched separate websites for the identification of unidentified bodies and stolen mobile phone verification.
A launching ceremony was held at the CPLC headquarters at Governor House where Governor Mohammad Zubair inaugurated the websites by ‘pushing the button’ to launch them.
Since its inception, CPLC has been successfully assisting victims of crimes like kidnapping, extortion, terrorism, fraud, harassment, robbery, rape, domestic violence, mobile snatching and finding lost and runaway persons.
The CPLC spokesperson said that a number of its projects have been very well received by the general public, which include mobile phone blocking and their recovery, as well as their Shanakht project launched in collaboration with the Edhi Foundation and Chhipa Trust for the identification of unknown bodies. The bodies are being identified through biometric scanning technology by utilising the National Database and Registration Authority's (NADRA) database. The cooperation being extended by the NADRA in this regard is exemplary, said the spokesperson.
Street crime drops this Ramazan, as police use innovative means to control crime
He said that under the Shanakht project, 1,223 dead bodies have been identified with the help of NADRA and subsequently handed over to the relatives of the deceased. The claimants of the bodies belonged to different parts of the country.
The website contains lists of unidentified bodies, where they were found, which morgue they are at, the estimated age and cause of death.
Mobile phone registration
The CPLC database contains records of more than one million IMEI numbers of stolen mobile phones. After verification, all these IMEI number have been blocked through the authority concerned or put under observation for recovery.
More than 44,000 recovered mobile phones have so far been returned to owners after due verification by the CPLC, said the spokesperson. He added that the CPLC has also developed website to facilitate buyers to verify IMEI numbers of used mobile phones before purchasing. Victims of lost mobile phones can also check the status of their devices through the website.
To facilitate citizens, the CPLC has introduced webpage for Shanakht and the mobile phones registration system, he said. Concerned citizens can now access the CPLC website to search for the bodies of their loved ones at www.shanakht.cplc.org.pk and, before purchasing used mobile phones, can verify that they have not been stolen at www.mobilephone.cplc.org.pk or by calling the CPLC's 24/7 helpline 1102.
