The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Wednesday remanded Abdul Majeed Khan Achakzai, a Balochistan Assembly member, in police custody over a murder case reported against him in 1992.

The provincial legislator appeared before the magistrate in District Court Quetta on Wednesday.

The police had requested for his physical remand in order to investigate the charges against him over the murder of local trader Abdul Ghaffar Ghibzai. Following the request, Achakzai was remanded for two days in police custody.

Hit and run: MPA arrested for crushing traffic sergeant to death

Ghibzai’s family had filed a report against Achakzai in Civil Line Police Station in 1992.

Achakzai’s lawyer Naseebullah Tareen, while talking to the media, said the police nominated his client in a case that was reported against unidentified persons. During the period of 25 years, Achakzai was elected as member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) multiple times, but no one ever asked for his physical remand or discussed the murder case, he added.

Tareen said that from the very beginning they had taken a clear stance that Achakzai was deliberately being nominated in ghost cases in clear violation of the law.

MPA accused of running over Quetta cop ‘doesn’t have a valid driving licence’

Achakzai was arrested in a hit-and-run case on June 24 after the CCTV footage of the accident went on air. The MPA, on June 20, ran over and killed traffic sergeant Haji Attaullah at Quetta’s GPO Chowk resulting in his death.
