Senate proceedings: Degree-awarding fashion institute to be established

Senate passes Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design Bill 2010.

ISLAMABAD:

The Senate on Wednesday passed the Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design Bill 2010 for the reconstitution of the Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD) in Lahore.

The objective of the bill is to establish a federal, national degree-awarding institute of fashion and design.

The bill stated that while there are many professional institutes in Pakistan in other disciplines, the country has a dearth of reputable and recognised fashion training institutes.

Privatising IDBP

The Senate Standing Committee on finance, revenue, economic affairs, statistics and planning and development unanimously recommended to the Upper House to pass the Industrial Development Bank of Pakistan (IDBP) (Reorganisation and Conversion) Bill 2010, for the conversion of the IDBP into a public private limited company.

The committee’s report recommended with a consensus that the bill, as passed by the National Assembly, may be passed by the Senate.
