Gates reaffirms commitment to polio eradication

Bill Gates calls up President Zardari to check on progress of the programme.

Chairman Microsoft Corporation Bill Gates telephoned President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday and talked about health-related issues in Pakistan, particularly the progress made on polio eradication, said spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar.


A campaign for polio eradication is being undertaken by the government of Pakistan in collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.


The President appreciated the foundation for providing generous contribution and support to the government of Pakistan and for their assistance in making Pakistan a polio-free country.

He apprised Gates of the National Emergency Action Plan 2011 for Polio Eradication under which the government, with the assistance of security forces, will ensure access to the polio vaccination to children across the country, particularly the tribal areas.

The President assured Gates that there will be strict oversight of the plan at the national and provincial levels through monitoring cells.

Meanwhile, Gates assured all-out support of his foundation towards complete eradication of the virus from Pakistan and thanked the President and the government for their commitment towards the cause. Published in The Express Tribune, April 7th,  2011.
