RAWALPINDI: A suspected dacoit, who had allegedly shot and injured a policeman during an attempted robbery, was arrested by Rawalpindi police on Saturday.

Identified as Osama, the dacoit was sent to Adiala Jail by police to be included in an identification parade, police sources said.

Osama had been nabbed by police while he and his accomplices tried to flee on Saidpur Road.  The dacoit sustained bullet injuries on legs during firing by police, they said. Osama, along with two of his accomplices, were trying to snatch a motorbike from a citizen when a police squad, led by SI Tariq, surrounded them.

Notwithstanding, the dacoits fled with police in hot pursuit. While fleeing, the suspects allegedly shot at the police, which left SI Tariq injured.  However, police managed to nab Osama on Saidpur Road while his accomplices fled.

New Town police station SHO Qaiser Nadim confirmed that they had arrested a dacoit.  He added that they had also booked him and had sent him to jail for an identification parade.

He claimed that Osama had allegedly confessed to his involvement in over 34 robberies in the garrison city.  “Police are trying to locate and arrest other members of his gang,” Nadim added.

Meanwhile, armed dacoits stormed an electronics store, located on Murree Road, and made off with cash, mobile phones and laptop. The incident took place within the remits of Waris Khan police station.
