ISLAMABAD:
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has been considered as a role model for South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries.

This was stated by NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry while chairing a meeting to review the performance of the bureau.

He said that NAB is committed to eradicating corruption and that its efforts helped improve Pakistan’s ranking on the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) where, according to a Transparency International report, has fallen to 116 over the past three years.

Chaudhry added that since its inception, NAB has received about 343,356 complaints from individuals along with from private and public organisations. During this period, NAB has authorised 11,581 complaint verifications, 7,587 inquiries, 3,846 investigations, filed 2,808 corruption references in the respective accountability courts with an overall conviction ratio of around 76 per cent.

As part of these efforts, NAB had managed to recover of ill-gotten money worth around Rs287.763 billion during this time.

The figures of complaints, inquiries and investigations had nearly doubled from 2014 to 2017 during the same period.

The comparative figures indicate the hard work being put in by all ranks of NAB staff. The increase in the number of complaints also reflects enhanced public trust in the NAB.

He said that NAB has also devised a comprehensive Partly Quantified Grading System (PQGS) to review and further improve the performance of officers. Under the grading system, NAB’s regional bureaus are being evaluated for the last three years on an annual basis on a given criterion which has proved very successful and the performance of NAB’s regional bureaus is increasing day-by-day due to regular monitoring and inspection.

The NAB chief added that they had also prescribed a maximum limit of 10 months- from complaint verification to inquiry, to investigation and finally to a reference in the accountability court.

He said that NAB organised an SAARC seminar in Islamabad in which SAARC member countries including India participated and appreciated the anti-corruption strategy adopted by NAB in curbing corruption. Due to this, NAB was selected as the first chairman of SAARC countries’ anti-corruption forum.

Later, NAB Deputy Chairman Imtiaz Tajwar told new NAB recruits, which are being training at the Police Training College Sihala, that NAB had adopted a proactive anti-corruption strategy through a zero tolerance policy.
