India players slam Afridi remarks: Report

NEW DEHLI: Indian cricket stars Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh have hit out at Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi for his comments that Indians do not have "big clean hearts" like Pakistani Muslims.

Afridi also praised Pakistan's media for being "100 times better" than India's in a Pakistani TV show aired Sunday that has caused hurt and anger across the border in India.

"If Indians were not large-hearted, they would not have made so much of progress and delivered growth," Harbhajan was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.

"I think it's been an uncalled for reaction. It wouldn't help the love and respect with which he is treated in this country."

India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in a much-hyped semi-final attended by the leaders of both countries before beating Sri Lanka in Mumbai last week to regain the World Cup after 28 years.

"Pakistanis indeed have very large hearts which is evident by their generous gesture of dropping so many catches against India during the semi-final clash," Yuvraj, named man of the tournament, told The Times of India.

"India would not have gone to the final had it not been for Pakistan's large-heartedness!"

Pakistan dropped four catches of Sachin Tendulkar who went on to make a vital 85 and fashion India's 29-run win over their rivals.

Afridi insisted later that his remarks had been taken out of context, although he stood by his comments about the Indian media.

His remarks shocked fans in India, who had greeted his efforts during the World Cup to promote harmony between the estranged neighbours whose diplomatic relations are fraught with tension.

Just find out nature of relation on various world forums. Forget about India and china what are doing for your country(Pakistan)?? And look at you... If I talk about China then it causes you lots of irritations but if your memory serves you well then try to use it and it will help you to recall that this discussion was started on the comments from Afridi but it was you who jumped on irrelevant issues but when I quoted the name of China then you got frustrated. This is what we call an Indian Justice. Right? I know China is giving you guys some real hard time and even now the way they are treating you is quite pathetic for example now they stamp their visas on a piece of paper instead of Indian Passport for Kashmiris and you can't do anything, so I can understand why you got so angry.. Anyways don't do it and try to face the situation with bravery instead of jumping here and there...You can satisfy your self with a compression between Pakistan and India but it will not change the situation. Ali | 13 years ago | Reply Ronit@ yes i confess that Dhoni is a better captain, he is more calm, dare to come for batting when required etc but i also believe he has very good fate as there are many great Indain Players like Tendulkar, Dravid, Gaungually but owing to average luck their captaincy record is not as good as Dhoni. we can say along with good performance luck is also vital. India was not perfroming very well before quarter final with the same team,same captain but won the world cup. so it is a game some time your perform or some time you not. one day you are making 100 and other day duck on first ball. its game. as you people (Indain) won i must congratulate you. NIce effort Team Indai. Afridi you lost the match so you need to shut your mouth, dont give any excuse, losing a match is not a crime but you did not put maximum effort. you played worest game of last world cup against India. Rather passing comments go to work and try to overcome weaknesses. sorry from all if i ofended some on in India and Pakistan.

abhinav | 13 years ago | Reply @qureshi I don't know what is the relevence of you being a woman here. I don't want comment on your personal experience because you have not provided any details. For your point about performance as a captain, here Afridi being most wicket taker doesn't make him good captain. A captain's responsibility is to take correct decision at correct time and keep the team's moral high. Sadly there is no statistics where you can judge the captaincy objectivly apart from number of wins (which depend on many other factors as well). We can argue all along who is better captain without any conclusion, only time will tell. At present Dhoni has advantage in his favour. Under his captaincy India won T-20 world cup, One day world cup and India is number 1 test playing team. So Afridi has to prove a lot. @shad I don't know why would you post China/ India comparison here? is Pakistan officially part of China now? or China follows same policy/Idealogy/government structure as Pakistan?

Even in the case of Kargil misadventure, Pakistan lied about its involvement and then had to eat crow after it was proven that the "raiders" were indeed recruits of the Northern Light Infantry of the Pakistani Army. Pakistan has a history of lies and deceit and that's the reason, even your Muslim neighbour, Afghanistan has nothing but contempt for you. You talk about the status of the trials here but seem unaware that all accused in the Godhra train burning case have been sentenced and a majority of them to the gallows. Even the judgment on the Ayodhya case has been delivered with 2/3 of the land going to Hindus and the remaining to Muslims. And since your Ian Chappell was all praises for Dhoni now (completely irrelevant as far as I'm concerned, had it been SL he would\ve been singing praises for Sangakara) have you forgotten how he bashed out on Sachin Tendulkar 4 years ago and said he should retire? Speaking of retirement, since you have many oldies retiring now, let's see Dhoni work with a different team, when you eventually give chances to younger players. That I guess will serve as a real test for him.

In my opinion the captain's reputation is based on his ability to build a team, convert a team into a winning unit and remain calm & composed under pressure and avoid controversies on and off the field, The last attribute is very important as he represents the country in that sport. Some times Dhoni adopted very negative, but within the rules, tactics to win matches like a test in INdia where his bowling tactics came under severe criticism.(He copied that from Australia I guess) But as he said, what finally counts is the result. He moulded the Chennai Super kings Team as well which is the consistent performer in the 3 years of IPL. Compared on these attributes, Afridi is not a match to Dhoni at all, forget about a poor second.

Grown up you guys... Also let me tell you the educational qualification of Tendulkar... Poor guys appeared class 10th examination twice & failed on both the occasions from Secondary School, Shardashram Vidhya Mandir, Mumbai... At least Afridi has completed till 11th standard... Don't you see that in your statdiums when ever your team is in pressure there is a death silence from the crowd, but even a single-run from the indian means a full celebration for them. if you forgot just watch the matches of india to recall your memories. Recall the semi-final in 1996, where the win of lankan could not be digested and the match had to be stopped and lankans where declared without ending the match. Also recall the test match(1999) in Col-kotta where when india was on the way of defeat what your crowd did and the entire stadium had to be emptied to allow Pakistan to get you all out. And what 2nd rank means is one didn't perform as well as the 1st ranked. This is not a matter of luck, but matter of relative performance. Did Indians perform badly? Sure they did in some aspects of the game. But, others did worse that's why they got kicked out or lost. Where does luck come in to the picture here? Yuvraj's words mean that Indian players don't have a 'large heart' to reciprocate the number of catches that Pakistani team dropped. :)

Mohammad Mohtashim Khan | 13 years ago | Reply :) Very amusing comments -- i think Afridi didn't make the comments with malice - reading into them they were a result of his frustration firstly because of losing and secondly of the media pressure on the team both within Pakistan and in India...what he infact wanted to do was put down both countries medias but could only do India's...... I think on the whole despite some of the stupid comments here we had a good match in Mohali...the better side on the day won...as Yuvraj said Pakistan were generous with their fielding and Umar Gul's bowling. Saying that we should have more cricket and people to contact between the two nationals..so we can move away from this hatred....living in the UK working with Indian colleagues...I can say safely that both these countries if friendly will much more successful and prosperous especially Pakistan. Together we will become world power's alone India will be stuck as a regional power focussed on dealing with the thorn in it's side "Pakistan" and Pakistan will never progress........Thats the honest truth of this whole saga.....

Afridi's comments were surprising to many Pakistanis also especially after crushing Pakistani media's attempts in the past to create similar controversies. Maybe he slipped up or crumbled under pressure, who knows and who cares? He's NOT a politician or international relations expert and should not have been asked the question in the first place. But what is even more ridiculous is the Indian players who have made the above comments (that's IF they made them!) Stick to playing cricket lads and if you can't create love then don't create more hatred.

I, being a Pakistan AND a Muslim, believe that whatever Afridi said was uncalled for. He needs to realise he shouldn't be passing such statements on the media KNOWING the kind of sensitive relations between the two countries. To be honest, I was quite disappointed in him. On the other hand, India and hostile Indians need to understand that Afridi is no politician, hence you can't expect him to give diplomatic answers, he speaks in accordance to his experience. And I like to believe that he might have experienced something pretty weird that made him say what he said. We must not forget what Gautam Gambhir said when they won the semi-final, dedicating the win to victims of 26/11. Is he stupid? It's just a game, funny you amalgamate it with revenge. But Afridi's attitude isn't justified either, whatever crap the other says, he should've acted gracefully and ignored. India and Pakistan, CHILL OUT for heaven's sake!
