Flood recovery: EU contributes $21.2 million

The aid will help repair thousands of govt offices.

ISLAMABAD:

As the early recovery and reconstruction phase continues in the flood affected areas, the European Union (EU) has contributed approximately $21.2 million to support the United Nations Development Programme for restoring and repairing thousands of local government offices.

Devastating floods last year led to destruction in almost every sector, damaging and destroying basic community infrastructure.

According to the agency, the government offices need to be repaired and be operational so that public services are resumed.

According to UNDP, an estimated 1,500 local government offices were severely damaged by the floods while hundreds of thousands of people are estimated to have lost essential legal records such as birth, death and marriage certificates, records of property and land titles, and educational certificates that are essential in reclaiming their property, accessing basic services and claiming compensation.

The aid will help restore access to services by repairing and equipping 190 critical local public administration offices, provide technical assistance and equipment to 120 government offices in 29 worst affected districts to facilitate recovery and re issuance of lost documents. Small businesses and farmers associations will also be supported through legal aid.

The EU’s commitment comes in response to the appeal launched by Pakistan government and UNDP for a $120 million early recovery programme.
