In a statement issued on Sunday, Akhtar said that there should be an increase in policemen on duty in shopping areas of the city during Ramazan. The mayor also asked Sindh Inpector General of the Police Allah Dino Khawaja to increase patrolling in areas of the metropolis where shopping malls and markets are located.
According to Akhtar, the residents of the port city are left to their own devices while hundreds of citizens are looted on a daily basis. He claimed that there is no one to stop street criminals. As Eidul Fitr is just around the corner, he said, several beggars have made their way to the port city and are also involved in street crime.

The mayor further said that the citizens are already deprived of water, electricity and all basic necessities and now they are being deprived of their hard-earned money. "The city is being ignored," he said, adding that now no concrete action is being taken by the Sindh government for the security of the people of Karachi.
He requested people to tackle these street criminals on their own and adopt security measures. He also asked citizens to return home early at night so that they could be saved from street criminals.
The mayor added that people need to keep an eye on suspicious activities in their areas and inform law enforcement agencies if they see something unusual happening. Street crime is increasing, he said, adding that compared to last year no security measures have been taken by the government in Ramazan.
