Woman kills daughter in India for falling in love and neglecting studies

Police say 18-year-old Rajeshwari was hit with an iron rod and the mother has confessed to the crime

A woman was arrested in the Kolar district of Karnataka, India on Monday for killing her teenage daughter because she fell in love and neglected her studies.

The 45-year-old woman, Venkatamma, an agricultural labourer, is accused of killing her 18-year-old daughter, Rajeshawari, for falling in love and not paying attention to her studies, according to police.

Superintendent Rohini Katoch Sepat said the mother was angry over Rajeshwari allegedly having an affair with someone belonging to the Chinnapura village, Hindustan Times reported.

He added that Rajeshwari was hit with an iron rod, causing her death on the spot.

Sepat said the woman had confessed to the crime and told the police that her daughter was dating a boy of the village and had failed in her exam.

Sub-inspector S. A Shivaraj of the Kolar Rural police said the case was taken up on Tuesday in the sessions court and the woman was remanded in judicial custody.
