Unidentified assailants late on Tuesday killed a chicken merchant at his shop located near Sir Syed Chowk on Tipu Road, Rawalpindi police said.

The merchant was identified as 56-year-old Umar Khatab who hails from Abbottabad.

Officials of the Airport Police Station (PS), within whose limits the murder took place, said that they had registered a case for murder against unidentified killers while further investigations were underway.

According to Civil Line Circle Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)Farhan Aslam, Khatab was sitting at his small chicken shop at around 12 am when unidentified culprits approached him and shot him. As a result of the attack, Khatab died on the spot.

His killers fled after committing the crime, DSP Aslam said.

He added that a nephew of the chicken trader in his statement said that he was repairing air conditioners at a shop near his uncle’s store when he heard the sound of gunfire. Noting that the sound came from his uncle’s shop, he rushed to the store and found Khatab lying dead in his chair with a bullet wound over his heart.

The DSP said that the Khatab’s body had been shifted to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital for post-mortem and a case had been lodged on the complaint of the merchant’s son.

When asked about the progress made in the case, DSP Aslam replied that so far police had failed to dig up any clues about the killers and are investigating the case via different angles.

Dacoits’ gang busted

The Special Investigation Unit of the Islamabad Police has busted a two-member gang involved in snatching mobile phones and handbags from women at gunpoint.

Inspector General of Islamabad Police Khalid Khattak had directed SSP-Operations Sajid Kaini and SP Investigation Hassan Iqbal to curb street crime.


Subsequently, SP investigation constituted a team to nab criminals involved in street crime and snatching.

The four-man SIU team headed by SI Muhammad Azam managed to bust the organised gang involved in street crime.

The gang used hold people at gunpoint before robbing them and fleeing on motorbikes. The SIU team also recovered two motorbikes, 13 stolen mobile phones, handbags and ATM cards from their possession.

The suspected gangsters were identified as Ausaf Yousaf, and Adnan Ahmed. Yousaf was a resident of Allama Iqbal Colony in Rawalpindi while Ahmed was a resident of Abbottabad.

On February 2, the two had snatched a handbag in Sector G-9/1 from the mother of Sardar Abu Bakkar for which case was registered with the Karachi Company police. On January 30, they had snatched a handbag in Sector F-11 Markaz from the wife of Javed Iqbal Khan for which a case was registered at the Shalimar police station.

On March 25, the gang snatched a handbag from the wife of Ghulam Muhammad in Sector G-9/2 Markaz and a case was registered at Karachi Company police station.

On January 22, they snatched a handbag in Sector F-10 Markaz from the family of Muhammad Iqbal following which a case was registered with the Shalimar police station.

Officials said that the two gang members had admitted to a number of other snatchings in sectors F10, F-11 Markaz, Karachi Company and various areas of the city.

The SIU is checking the records of concerned police stations and further investigation is underway.

SSP-Operations Kiani has announced commendation certificates along with suitable cash reward for the police team.
