Major power breakdown hits Karachi again

More than 15 grid stations trip due to fault in high tension wire at Bin Qasim power station

KARACHI: A massive power outage hit a large swathe of Karachi for the second time in less than two day when a high tension wire at the Bin Qasim power station encountered a technical fault.

According to reports, more than 15 K-Electric grid stations tripped due to the fault which developed late Monday night. The major areas of Karachi which face a power blackout include Defence, Defence View, Mehmoodabad, Korangi, Landhi, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Liaquatabad , F B Area, North Karachi, New Karachi, Buffer zone, Gul Bahar, Shadman Town, Aisha Manzil, Shah Faisal Colony, Malir, Khokarapar, Mubina Town, Gadap City, Surjani Town and many parts of the old city.

Power outages during first sehri foretell a difficult Ramazan

Many Karachi residents also took to the streets to protest against K-Electric. The power company, when contacted, was not available for comments.

A major breakdown hit Karachi on the eve of Ramazan on Saturday and plunged more than half of the metropolis into darkness on throughout the first sehri of the fasting month.

Baligur | 7 years ago | Reply @FAZ Because all the believers in the entire city switch on their lights, fans and ACs at the same time for Iftar, taraveeh prayers and Sehri. This creates unbearable load for the poorly maintained power infrastructure during these times and that causes lines to trip. The only solution in the short term is do away with special treatment for power consumers during Iftar, Sehri and taraveeh time.

Mohsin | 7 years ago | Reply The K Electric management is totally failed in maintaining the distribution system. Areas which are exempted from Load shedding and paying their bills are also suffering by this way the KE is also loosing it's revenues.

Andrew | 7 years ago | Reply This is not a breakdown. This is nothing but an effort to keep the general public exhausted so that our attentions will not be turned towards other matters. This means that there is no back up for any sort of issue in this country. If the KE cannot handle the situation without causing major breakdowns and discomfort to the public what can we expect if a disaster actually hits this city. There will be a total breakdown of law and order.

We need to look into context of statements made by both CM and Federal Ministers regarding taking over of KE. Not to say KE has done a wonderful job in the past since its new admin took control. But its election year coming. Some jialas need jobs and KE is a rare institution posting profits..
