After Turbat, interior Sindh ‘to bear the brunt of summers’
PMD predicts temperature hitting 53° Celsius in June
ISLAMABAD:
With Turbat already reeling under the severe heat wave at 53 Celsius for a second day in a row on Monday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that cities in interior Sindh will also bear the brunt of summer in June.
In Pakistan, the highest-ever temperature recorded was on May 28 (Sunday), when the mercury shot up to 53.5Celsius in Turbat.
According to the PMD, the temperature shot up to 47 Celsius in Panjgur, breaking the seven-year-old record in May.
Talking to The Express Tribune, PMD Director General Dr Ghulam Rasul said, “Considering the ongoing weather situation in the country, it is expected that in June the temperatures in major cities like Turbat, Mohen-jo-Daro, Sibbi, Jaccobad, Larkana, Dadu, Nokkundi, Dalbandin, Bhakkar, Sakrund and Sukkur will cross 53 Celsius.”
Pakistan’s hottest day recorded in Turbat
“Since April this year, Pakistan has been witnessing record-breaking temperatures in its cities and these are all being considered unusual weather events,” he said.
He said temperature reaches its peak in June as the level of humidity rises significantly. “This shows that with each passing day the impact of climate change on Pakistan worsens,” he said.
Rasul said that even in northern areas the temperatures have risen to 36 to 37Celsius this month “which is also being considered an unusual weather pattern”. He said in June the weather in interior Sindh and southern Punjab would continue to remain dry and very hot.
Next 24 hours
About the weather in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad and northern areas over the next 24 hours, the Met official predicted isolated showers of low to moderate intensity from Tuesday night till Thursday morning.
“This will help bring down the temperature by three to four degrees Celsius providing respite to the people from the sizzling heat,” he said.
