Fire disrupts PU laptop distribution ceremony

Panicked students rushed out of the auditorium, but the fire was quickly extinguished.

LAHORE: A laptop distribution ceremony was disrupted at the Punjab University after a fire broke out in the hall where proceedings were being held on Tuesday.

Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana and Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir were also part of the ceremony.

The fire broke out in the Faisal Auditorium of the Punjab University during the inaugural ceremony of the fourth phase of the Chief Minister’s Laptop Scheme. Panicked students rushed out of the auditorium, but the fire was quickly extinguished and the ceremony continued.

PU Spokesperson Khurram Shahzad said that the incident occurred due to a shortcircuit and the situation was quickly under control due to the management’s timely action. During the ceremony, Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana said that the government was performing its constitutional responsibility of providing social justice to people and there was a need to promote positive thinking in society for the country’s development.

Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir, Higher Education Department (HED) Secretary Nasim Nawaz, senior faculty members and a large number of students from various institutions of higher learning were present on the occasion.
