Efforts under way to ensure independent media: NAB chief

PBA delegation raise concerns related to media industry

ISLAMABAD: A high-powered delegation comprising senior office-bearers of the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) met NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry here on Tuesday.

Headed by Chairman Mian Aamer Mehmood, the PBA delegation included Sultan Lakhani, Mir Ibrahim Rahman, Shakeel Masud Hussain and Tahir A Khan.

During the meeting, matters related to the media industry, role of the media towards safeguarding national and security interests, issues of national importance and the Axact case were discussed.

Talking to the delegation, the NAB chairman asked the media heads to play their role and utilise the immense power of the media to further national interests, safeguard their social and religious values and prove itself as a bulwark against the tide of corruption and malpractice.

The delegation raised its concerns regarding the Axact scandal and said some media channels were being funded through dubious, untaxed and unverified money from abroad.

The NAB chairman said that no compromise would be made towards anything that would affect the image of the country or violate laws of the land. He said efforts were under way to ensure that the independent media progresses and prospers in an open and transparent manner.
