Housing communitiesHundreds of retired employees of Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Monday carried out a protest demonstration first outside Rawalpindi Press Club and then outside the corporation building.

The retired employees had long been protesting against delay in disbursement of their monthly pensions and in some case provision basic retirement benefits.

The protestors criticised the government for spending billions on development schemes but not paying pensions to needy and old pensioners regularly.

Talking to Express Tribune, Tahir Mahmood Khan, chairman of Pensioners’ Action Committee said that as many as 2,669 retired RMC employees were suffering due to delay in pension disbursement. Among these 1,957 were retirees of the coproation, 53 of district council, 92 of Parks and Horticulture Authority, 233 of health branch of RMC, and 234 of education branch.




Khan said that PHA retirees were waiting for their basic pension benefits in lump sum since the last three years.

Moreover, the monthly payment of pension was also held up, he said. RMC retirees were without pension for last two months and the rest of pensioners were waiting for their dues since last five months.

Later, the representatives of the pensioners had a meeting with Chaudhry Tariq Mahmood, deputy chairman of RMC.

The deputy chairman assured the pensioners that he would write a letter to the provincial authorities for special grants to pay the pensions.
