India’s Border Security Force (IBSF), on Monday, claimed to have shot dead an elderly Pakistani woman allegedly trying to cross the Working Boundary (WB) in Gurdaspur district.
“The 60-year-old woman was asked to stop but when she continued to march towards the Indian territory, she was shot at resulting in her death,” The Hindu quoted a senior BSF official as saying.
The incident reportedly occurred in the wee hours on Monday when BSF personnel spotted suspicious movement alongside the border. According to the BSF official, the woman had covered her face, making it difficult for the security officials to recognise her.
Army chief visits LoC amid fresh truce violation by Indian troops
The incident comes in wake of increasing cross-fire violations by Indian security forces alongside the Line of Control (LoC) and deteriorating ties between the two South Asian neighbours. According to the Pakistan Army, Indian forces committed at least 178 ceasefire violations along the LoC and WB in 2016, killing 19 civilians and injuring 80 others.
Earlier this month, India accused Pakistani forces of killing two soldiers patrolling the LoC and mutilating their bodies. Pakistan Army denied the allegations and said it had not committed any ceasefire violations.
