ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday granted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) counsel 11 days period to consult party leadership about the apex court’s observation to refer the foreign funding case to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for adjudication in the matter.

The development came a day after advocate Anwar Mansoor Khan found himself struggling to provide the money trail for PTI funds as the apex court came down hard on him for ‘inadequate’ arguments to justify the party’s source for acquiring millions of dollars from the US between 2010 and 2013.

During the course of the hearing on Thursday, the PTI counsel pleaded the top court to allow him time for consulting the party leadership, including chairman Imran Khan, about the SC’s Wednesday observations. Accepting his plea, a three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, adjourned the hearing of the case till May 23.

The bench is hearing a plea from Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi, seeking disqualification of the PTI chief for “giving false declaration that the party did not receive funds from a prohibited source”.
