EPA asks top shops in Islamabad to implement plastic ban

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) has asked leading stores in the capital to strictly adhere to a ban on non-biodegradable plastic products.

The Pakistan Environ­mental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) submitted on Friday a progress report to the Ministry of Climate Change on non-biodegradable plastic products in the federal capital.

Plastic bags ban: EPA calls trade bodies to mull move

Pak-EPA Director General Farzana Altaf, during a meeting, presented the report to Ministry of Climate Change Secretary Syed Abu Akif.

Altaf said that the agency had notified the regulation, “Prohibition of Non-Biodegradable Plastic Products” which bans manufacturing, sale and usage of plastic bags.

She added that the strategy to implement this regulation included making degradable plastic bags readily available, spread awareness among the stakeholders and consumers of the capital through the media, internal and external meetings with trade bodies.


Besides, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Islamabad Capital Territory Administration (ICTA) have also been asked to ensure the implementation of the regulations, she added.

Govt to ban non-biodegradable bags after three months

To provide a substitute for plastic shopping bags, Altaf said four firms had been registered to import additives which would be used in manufacturing biodegradable bags.

Moreover, the director general said, 46 leading retail outlets of the capital were asked to play their part in promoting bio-degradable shopping bags.

Initially, she said, the authorities would raise awareness and convince the people to stop using no-degradable bags.
