ISLAMABAD:
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will on Saturday (today) perform the ground-breaking ceremony for the Peshawar Mor-New Islamabad International Airport (NIIA) section of the Metro Bus project.

The groundbreaking ceremony was originally scheduled for April 21. But it was postponed after the announcement of the verdict in the Panama Papers case verdict a day earlier on April 20.

While talking to The Express Tribune, an official of the National Highway Authority (NHA) said that they had already started building infrastructure for the project from the new airport end.

Recently, the executive committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) had approved the construction and allied works for the new section of the project which is expected to cost Rs16.43 billion.

Under the project, a 25.6 kilometre-long two-lane signal-free corridor would be built. The dedicated corridor would be around 9.6 to 10.4 metres wide with normal sections for bus rapid transport system, to connect the stations which have already been constructed.

The project is being built to provide an easy, fast and comfortable transport for passengers and staff travelling to and from the newly constructed International airport and the capital.




Ambitious deadline

The NHA has a little over three months to complete the project since the premier had directed that the project is completed by August 14 to coincide with the launch of the NIIA.

The NHA official said that after securing approval for the project, they had started building the infrastructure for the metro bus. He added that last week, work at Peshawar-Mor – at a fast pace - had started a week ago.

“All efforts are being made to ensure that infrastructure work for the project does not affect the current layout of the Kashmir Highway and does not cause any kind of disruption in the flow of traffic, especially during peak hours,” the official added.

He added that work on the project was continuing day and night. Moreover, he said that the pace of the work would not slow down during Ramzan in order to complete the project on time.
